How much time does it take to rescue a kitten? Could be 15 minutes for simple cases, up to several days for complex ones, could be the whole night like yesterday.
A two-month-old kitten was crying from a car in a parking lot, near the Chen cinema in Rehovot. Nothing uncommon. Kittens get into cars, travel with them. Get lost, get hungry and dehydrated, get their sense of smell damaged by engine oils.
This little girl was crying non-stop for the whole night until her voice got disrupted and started to faint. She was afraid of us on the one hand and desperate to get help on the other, ideally from her mother. She moved from one car to another, had little interest in food or water. Was terrified and did not know what to do.
It is common to think that cats are strong animals and know how take care of themselves. Kittens don’t. Behind any good-looking cat on the street are several brothers and sisters who did not make it that far.
After spending the whole night trying to catch her, @rimmarat and myself have given up. The day had to get started, we couldn’t stay much longer. The kitten barricaded herself in another car, would not get out, we could not get hold of the owner of the car. It looked like a dead end, at least for the moment.
The problem is that there might not have been another chance to save her. She could get killed or wounded by a started engine, could travel away with the car or fallen out of it during the ride to become another spot on the road that people turn their eyes off.
Most frustrating was that several times, I almost got hold of her, she slipped out of my hands. So, we had another final attempt, and another one. And one more. Until owner of the last car came in contacted by the police and opened the lid. That was it. A huge relief.
The kitten was taken immediately to our vet, she was full of fleas and presumably worms. After the quarantine she will be vaccinated and move to a foster home, hoping to find a permanent one.
